Our Nation is in Peril

Our nation is in peril. Yesterday afternoon I saw an e-mail come across with a headline that read something like “We have lost a great conservative.” Thinking that it was probably some kind of click bait I thought, “OK, I’ll bite.” What I read hit me like a ton of bricks. US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died Saturday afternoon. He was the solid rock of constitutional law and decisions on the Supreme Court. There will be loud cries from the left to immediately confirm an Obama appointee. Thankfully, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell initially said that the next appointment should come from the next President. Politico quoted McConnell,

“The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President.”

Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson agrees that we need to wait. In an interview with the AJC, Senator Isakson said,

“My personal feelings are we’re eight months away from an election in November and 10 months away from swearing in a new president of the United States. The American people are going to the polls to vote in November to pick the next president and I think the next president ought to be the one to fill that vacancy and not the president who’s going out. No risk of judgment when you’re talking about the Supreme Court is worth what it could do to the country by acting too fast at the wrong time.”

Senator Isakson is absolutely right. Remember these words. There will be intense pressure from the left and from Obama for the Senate to be “reasonable” and fulfil its constitutional authority. There will be cries that Republicans are “playing politics.” We cannot yield in this fight. This is not playing politics. Our nation is in peril. Barack Obama and his supporters in congress have brought us to the brink of peril. Senators must stand with a steadfast, immovable, resolve. This is not negotiable.
