I am a writer, political analyst, minister, and candidate for US Congress.

After serving two and a half years in the Trump administration as speechwriter for Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, I resigned in order to run for the US House of Representatives for the 2nd District of Georgia in the 2020 election cycle.

I was born in Barnesville, Georgia. My family moved to Bonaire, Georgia when I was still a toddler. After graduating from Warner Robins High School, I attended Gordon Military College and enlisted in the United States Army in 1973. I served four years as a Military Police Investigator in the Panama Canal Zone and at Hunter Army Air Field, Savannah, Georgia.

After receiving an honorable discharge, I used the GI Bill to earn a Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Administration from Georgia Southern. I later moved to Fort Worth, Texas and earned a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I have a broad background in government, working as city administrator in Georgia and Texas, county government in Texas, and state and federal government. I also served as pastor in Southern Baptist Churches in Georgia and on the foreign mission field. In the political arena my service includes leadership in the Republican Party at the county, district and state level as well as being a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

While reading bills coming before Congress, particularly during the Obama years, I found them to be complicated, convoluted, and lacking any semblance of common sense. It was this experience that led me to coin the title for this blog, “Common Sense from DC – Not Washington”

My writings have now grown in influence with this website. Here you will find observations, analysis, encouragement, and simple common sense.

I will not bombard you with forwarded e-mails.My writing is original, brief, easy to read, and to the point. When you receive an e-mail with the heading, “doncole.com,” you will know that you gain informative and interesting analysis and commentary that is worth reading and sharing with others.
