Meet Wayne Johnson

A few weeks ago, I received a call from a fellow in Macon named Wayne Johnson. He wanted to talk about the 2nd District Congressional race. He said that a mutual friend encouraged him to talk with me.

I am accustomed to getting inquiries about that race. I always try to talk the interested parties out of running and have a sanity check of questions for them to ask of themselves before taking on such a task.

I explained to Wayne that I was not running because Crisp county is now in the 8th district and I have no intention of running in another district where I cannot even vote for myself.

Wayne wanted to meet me in person. When I suggested 6:00 am the following morning, he quickly agreed.

The next day, I introduced Wayne to the infamous Cordele Denny’s Brain Trust. I watched to see how he interacted with the group. He easily engaged, listened intently, and was genuinely interested in the issues and questions that arose.

Wayne and I met privately and talked in more detail about his plans for running for Congress. He has a strong background in banking and had served in the Trump administration with the Department of Education (DOE) in charge of the Student Loan program. He has started and sold businesses and was willing to make a significant personal investment in the campaign.

What struck me most in our conversation was his calm, but determined, demeanor. He is not a typical politician. He told me about some of the issues he tackled.

Wayne is a problem solver and says that he saw that a focused, undeterred, dogged persistence wins the day in Washington. He said that he wants to “Stop the Stupid.” One example in particular stood out to me.

He cut through the red tape for disabled veterans to get relief on student loan debt as Congress intended. As a four year Army veteran himself, I could see the fight in his eyes when he told me what was happening.

He said that the bureaucrats at DOE were making our disabled veterans jump through hoops unnecessarily to apply for relief on student loans. He fixed it so that when the VA declared a veteran disabled, they got the relief immediately without the burdensome application process. He said, “What they were doing was just stupid. We stopped it and fixed the problem.”

I was truly impressed with Wayne and suggested that we meet again and I bring my wife, Leslie, to meet him. Leslie has the intuition to spot a fake politician a mile away. (She has been around enough of them.)

After that meeting, I was convinced that Wayne is a genuine, honest, strong candidate for Congress and can win in the new 2nd District. It will not be a cakewalk. There are others who have announced and there will be a contested primary.

Wayne asked me to come on board with him and I joined his team. We will make good use of that year I invested going after Sanford.

Wayne is not afraid to try something different. He made a 30 second advertisement to wish the people of the 2nd District a Merry Christmas while at the same time pointing out the vital importance of this race. The ad will be aired on Fox and Friends and The Five on the Fox News Network Thursday and Friday before Christmas.

You can watch the ad here.

If you live in the 2nd District, I commend Wayne Johnson to you. He will work for you and the people of the 2nd Congressional District. You can learn more about Wayne at his website: johnsoncongress.com
