Watch the Clock!

Watch the Clock! On the surface four news stories may appear to be unrelated. A closer examination reveals the Democrat chess match for the future of our country.

HR1 is the big-government Democrat answer to the rapid spread of election reform bills sweeping across red states. These election reform bills, such as Georgia’s, make it easier to vote but harder to cheat.

HR1 nationalizes elections, mandates new bureaucrat-run redistricting agencies, and uses taxpayer money to add to career politician campaign funds. At the same time it allows those same politicians to use campaign funds for personal use. I call it the Sanford Bishop protection act.

On June 22, Republicans in the Senate blocked a move to end debate. Democrats needed 60 votes to end the debate but could only muster 50. Headlines read that the bill was dead. Not so fast.

Earlier that day, fifteen Republican governors sent a letter to the Secretary of Commerce urging her to move forward quickly with the census. So what is the connection between HR1 and the census? Redistricting.

State legislatures are responsible for drawing new districts that are equal in population. In order to determine equal population, they need census information.

If HR1 had passed, then the legislatures would be required to set up a non-partisan, independent commission to draw lines. Supposedly this independent commission would remove the politics from the redistricting process.

Whoever believes that fails to understand human nature. There is no such thing as an independent agency that can remove politics from the redistricting process.

HR1 did not pass but it was only the 60 vote requirement in the Senate filibuster rule that kept it from passing. A simple majority in the Senate could change the rule to eliminate the filibuster and with 50 votes plus the vote of the Vice-President, HR1 would go to the President for his signature.

If the state legislatures get the census information and draw the lines, then it will be another ten years before the next census. The Biden administration is simply trying to run down the clock on census data while Democrats try to get 50 votes to change the filibuster rule.

That brings us to the Democrats in the Texas legislature where they have their own unique way of stopping legislation. If enough of them leave town there will not be a quorum and nothing happens without a quorum.

They chartered a plane and left the state for the Democrat’s sanctuary of Washington, DC. They held press conferences and President Biden made a speech about all these states suppressing votes with their election integrity laws. It brought HR1 back to the forefront of the news cycle.

HR1 is dead in the water, but it is by no means dead. The Biden administration is desperately trying to find 50 votes in the Senate to end the filibuster before the legislatures draw new congressional districts which will likely swing the 2022 House back to Republican control.

I am reminded of listening to the famous voice of the Bulldogs, Larry Munson, in the 1992 Georgia-Auburn game in the final seconds of the game. Georgia was clinging to a tight lead and Munson was shouting into the microphone, “Watch the clock! When the clock ran out, Munson exclaimed, “Old Lady Luck Saved Us.”

Four stories that would seem to have no connection have a common thread. That thread is HR1 and, if you listen closely, you may hear the gravelly voice of the late Larry Munson, “Watch the clock!”
