We Won! Stop Playing Defense!

There has been a visceral reaction from conservatives at the budget bill that will fund the government through the end of the year.  President Trump and Republicans campaigned on several key issues including repeal and replacement of Obamacare, defunding Planned Parenthood, Sanctuary Cities, and building the wall.

The appointment and subsequent confirmation of Judge Gorsuch was a key victory. Executive orders that overturned Obama’s Executive orders were victories.

On the Legislative front, the movement has been slow at best.  The voters who flooded the polling places to vote for Trump and Republicans are losing patience.

I have been reading a book published by Hillsdale College entitled, The US Constitution, A Reader. The book is a compilation of original writings by our founding fathers and those who influenced their thinking.

You may wonder what this has to do with the title of this post – “Why I Support Karen Handel.” It is a reminder that the platform on which Karen stands is not something new. Her philosophy is grounded in the same philosophy documented over two centuries ago.

A Farmer and His Faith

On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the United States Supreme Court, Justice Clarence Thomas, a Georgian, administered the oath of office to Sonny Perdue, a fellow Georgian, to serve as the United States Secretary of Agriculture.  Sonny Perdue joins President Trump’s administration with unique qualifications.

He grew up on a farm and has experienced the full cycle of life in farming. He knows what it is like to prepare the soil, plant the seed, care for the growing crop, harvest, move it to market, set aside proceeds from the fruit of his labor, and start the process all over again.

2nd District Unanimously Supports Handel in 6th

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, Republicans in Fourteen Congressional Districts across Georgia held District Conventions.  The Second Congressional District unanimously adopted a resolution supporting Karen Handel in the special election runoff on June 20th. Many at the convention also backed the resolution with checks and on-line donations to Karen’s campaign.

Congressman Sees His Constituents as Helpless

In a recent editorial, Congressman Sanford Bishop decried the 2018 federal budget submitted by President Trump. He wrote that the proposal would be a “recipe for disaster” for the people of the Second Congressional District of Georgia.

Bishop said that his metric for analyzing legislation is whether or not it improves the lives of the people of Southwest Georgia. His editorial reveals his view of the citizens of Southwest Georgia as being helpless and totally dependent on the federal government.

Trump – Missiles – and Our Adversaries

Last week, President Trump announced that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria had deployed chemical weapons again. Visibly moved by the news, and in a reference to former President Obama’s red-line speech, Trump said that this attack crossed “many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines.”

The following day, he ordered a narrowly targeted strike on the Syrian air base from which the Syrians launched the attack. President Trump was right in ordering the strike.

I May Be Proved Wrong About the Nuclear Option

Over two months ago, I predicted that there would be no nuclear option in the confirmation of Judge Gorsuch. (See February 1, 2017 – “There Will Not Be a Nuclear Option”) It now appears that I may be proven wrong. I still find it hard to believe that the Democrats will take this Kamikaze dive.

Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, is one of the strongest advocates of Senate decorum and tradition. On April 2, 2017 Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, McConnell made it crystal clear that Judge Gorsuch will be confirmed.

Lessons Learned from Obamacare Replacement

The talking heads and pundits have pointed their fingers and cast the blame on the “failure” of the Obamacare legislation vote that Speaker Ryan cancelled last Friday. I do not see productive value for the American people and the Republican Party in the finger pointing and blame.

It is beneficial to take a look at what happened and learn from the process. Three words summarize what happened: Communicated, Complicated, and Confidence.

Democrats, Gorsuch, and the “Little Guy”

I watched some of the Gorsuch confirmation hearings yesterday. Democrats were clearly playing the class warfare card. This was a strategy revealed before the hearings even began. Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono summed it up with her statement:

“I have not seen that the rights of minorities are a priority for you. In fact, a pattern jumps out at me, you rarely seem to find in favor of the ‘little guy.’”
