2nd District Convention Delegates Reflect Primary Voters

Across Georgia last Saturday the Republican party held District Conventions.  Our District Chairman, Joseph Brannan set the tone for the meeting by stating that his desire was to see a slate of delegates for the Republican National Convention who would represent the results of the primary.

Chairman Brannan appointed Gerald Smith of Sumter County as the chairman of the committee.  He also appointed Seth Harpe – former State Senator from Muscogee County, Richard Wallace from Bibb County, Ritch McCutchen – 2nd District Chair of the Trump Campaign from Crisp County, and Don Cole – former 2nd District GOP Chair from Crisp County.

The Birth of a Monster – The 16th Amendment and the IRS

I will give you a list of dates and ask you to associate events with each date. December 25, July 4, April 15. You probably got three for three. Christmas, Independence Day, and the day that taxes are due.

This year, the IRS, generously allowed another 3 days until April 18. If you have not filed already, enjoy those three days while you can because it does not happen very often.

Bobby Scott, Candidate for Congress, Dies

I received news yesterday that Bobby Scott, Republican candidate for Congress, died unexepectedly Saturday afternoon. Muscogee County Coroner, Buddy Bryan said that Scott died in his sleep. Scott suffered with diabetic ketoacidosis. He also had high blood sugar and high blood pressure. Scott was 40-years-old.

I met Bobby in person for the first time last Tuesday at the Southwest Georgia Republican Party Headquarters grand opening. After the event, we were talking about the campaign when he looked at his watch and said that he had to leave to get his son.

We never expect this kind of news. According to the news reports, he was found by his son who could not wake him on Saturday afternoon. Our prayers are with Bobby’s family, loved ones, friends, and his campaign team.

Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust – It’s All About the Ground Game

I once heard someone sum up the game strategy of legendary Georgia Bulldog Coach Vince Dooly. “Three yards and a cloud of dust.” It was a strategy built on fundamentals with a focus on keeping control of the ball and steady, consistent, movement down the field. There were no exciting choreographed, complicated, plays. Just three yards and a cloud of dust.

The Ted Cruz campaign could also be characterized as three yards and a cloud of dust. Cruz is a master political strategist. He knows what it takes to win and he has built a campaign organization that focuses on the fundamentals. Last August, Ted Cruz launched a bus tour of states across the South. It was months before the primaries in these states.

Governor Deal Vetoes HB 757 Free Exercise Protection Act

Governor Deal vetoed House Bill 757, commonly referred to as the Religious Freedom Act. His stated reason was that the law was not necessary in Georgia. He referred specifically to requiring someone to participate in a religious ceremony, including marriage ceremonies, if it was contrary to sincerely held religious beliefs.

“While most people would agree that government should not force such actions, there has not been a single instance of such taking place in Georgia. If there has been any case of this type in our state it has not been called to my attention.”

My Response to Erick Erickson’s Latest

Erick Erickson is a talk show host on Atlanta’s WSB Radio. He was the editor of RedState, a conservative political blog. Recently he started another conservative blog, The Resurgent.

Erick has made it clear to anyone who reads his columns that he does not like Donald Trump. That is an understatement. He loathes and despises Donald Trump.

He has even said that if Trump is the nominee, he will not vote for him. That would be one less vote that Hillary would need if Erick follows through.

There is No Need for a Showdown

The headlines for the past several days have focused on the “showdown” between President Obama and the Republicans in the Senate over a replacement for the late Justice Antonin Scalia. There is no reason to have a showdown.

Some say that the President should not nominate a replacement in the last year of his term just months before an election. Some say that the Senate should not consider any nominee of President Obama in the last year of his administration.

Our Nation is in Peril

Our nation is in peril. Yesterday afternoon I saw an e-mail come across with a headline that read something like “We have lost a great conservative.” Thinking that it was probably some kind of click bait I thought, “OK, I’ll bite.”

What I read hit me like a ton of bricks. US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died Saturday afternoon. He was the solid rock of constitutional law and decisions on the Supreme Court.
