Foreign Relations and David Perdue

Roll Call has taken notice of David Perdue in his role on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The last sentence of the article said that Perdue’s interest is in “restoring the former role of the Foreign Relations Committee in big national debates.”

Senator Perdue has already started testing his strength by putting pressure on the State Department in their planned action to waste money by building a new training facility in Virginia rather than a more cost effective approach of expanding on existing infrastructure at the training center in Brunswick, Georgia.  He has engaged a bi-partisan delegation to demand an independent cost study.

Review of Chris Christie Presidential Candidacy Announcement

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie became the 14th Republican to announce his candidacy for President. He made his announcement speech on June 30, 2015 at his hometown high school, Livingston High School, Livingston, New Jersey.

Christie spent the first few minutes of his speech thanking the people of Livingston and reflecting on growing up there. He moved to Livingston when he was four years old. He told of how his father and mother had both lost their fathers at a young age. His father, although admitted to Columbia University, could not go because he could not afford it.

Review of Scott Walker Presidential Candidacy Announcement

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker became the 15th Republican to announce his candidacy for President. He made his announcement speech on July 13, 2015 at the Waukesha County Expo Center, Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The stage was set to present Scott Walker as a candidate who is close to the people and a hard working leader. There was no podium on the stage. He stood in an area that was surrounded by the audience on both sides and in the front. He wore an open collar long sleeve shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

He opened his speech with three words, “I love America.” He went on to talk about two veterans who had influence his life.

Review of Bobby Jindal Announcement Speech

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal became the 13th Republican to announce his candidacy for President. He made his announcement speech on June 24, 2015 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana.

He took one sentence of five words to introduce himself, “My name is Bobby Jindal” and in his second sentence he announced his candidacy. “I am governor of the great state of Louisiana, and I’m running for President of the greatest country in the world, the United States of America!”

His opening two sentences provide some insight into Jindal’s approach. He doesn’t waste words, gets to the point, and goes to work.

Review of Donald Trump Announcement Speech

Donald Trump was the 12th Republican candidate to announce. He made his announcement speech on June 16, 2015 at Trump Tower in New York, New York.

He opened his speech comparing his opening event to some of the other announcements. “They didn’t know the air conditioner didn’t work. They sweated like dogs. They didn’t know the room was too big because they didn’t have anybody there. How are they going to beat ISIS?”

He said that our country is in serious trouble because we don’t have victories anymore. He gave examples of China, Japan, and Mexico. He asked, “When was the last time you saw a Chevrolet in Tokyo?”

Review of Jeb Bush Announcement Speech

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush became the 11th Republican announcing his candidacy. He made the announcement on June 15, 2015 at Miami-Dade College in Miami, Florida.

He opened his speech with a brief word of welcome and incorporated into the welcome a few words that signaled his approach to his campaign.

“You know, I always feel welcome at Miami-Dade College. This is a place that welcomes everyone with their hearts set on the future. A place where hope leads to achievement and striving leads to success. For all of us, it is just the place to be in the campaign that begins today.”

4th of July and 6 Powerful Words We Need in a Candidate

This coming Saturday, we will celebrate the 239th birthday of the United States. It is far more than just the anniversary of an event in time. The opening words and the closing words of the Declaration of Independence have a powerful message for us today.

“When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”

There is a recognition that this new nation was on equal standing among the powers of the earth with any other nation on the earth. The basis of that equal standing was not something that other nations gave to them, but something to which God held the title and God gave to them.

Review of Lindsey Graham Announcement Speech

Lindsay Graham announced his candidacy for the Presidency in his hometown of Central, South Carolina on June 1, 2015. His young sister, Darline, introduced him and shared the background story of their parents who died when she was 11 and he was 20 in college. Their bond is especially tight because of the adversity they faced in the loss of their parents.

He opened his speech getting straight to the point of why he was there in his hometown that day.

“Many of you have known me for a long time. Some of you have known me since my family lived in the back of the bar in that building. But I’m pretty sure no one here, including me, ever expected to hear me say: ‘I’m Lindsey Graham, and I’m running for President of the United States.’”

 The theme of his announcement was crystal clear – defend America.

Review of George Pataki Announcement Speech

George Pataki announced his run for President in Exeter, New Hampshire on May 28, 2015. He opened his speech thanking those who were attending, those who had elected him as Governor three times, and then gave a greeting in Spanish.

Pataki defeated three term incumbent New York Governor Mario Cuomo in the 1994 Republican Revolution. He was subsequently elected for two more terms, serving three terms as Governor of New York.

Hurricane David Hits the State Department

I get several press releases each day from various sources. Over the past two days I received two releases in particular that caught my attention more than others.

Georgia Senator David Perdue has been in the Senate for six months. He quickly rose to the position of Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on State Department and USAID Management, Internal Operations, and Bilateral International Development.

On Monday he introduced a bi-partisan bill, “Improving Department of State Oversight Act” which gives strength to the Office of Inspector General and Congressional oversight for the department. “Conducting Congressional oversight is critical to making Washington more accountable, and a good place to start is at the scandal-ridden State Department,” said Senator Perdue.
